Legal/Risk Department
The County Legal/Risk Department provides a diverse range of legal and risk management services for the government of Doña Ana County. The department is staffed by three attorneys, three paralegals, one internal affairs investigator, one risk manager, one safety/loss control and training specialist and one public records coordinator.
The Department provides legal advice to the Board of County Commissioners, the County Manager, the Sheriff, the Assessor, the County Clerk, the Treasurer, the Probate Judge and appointed commissions such as the Planning and Zoning Commission. The Department also advises the directors and staffs of all departments within the County government. The Department assesses and manages the insurance needs of the County.
The attorneys attend internal and public meetings, perform legal research, draft legal opinions and documents, negotiate on the County's behalf, and represent the County in court and administrative hearings. The paralegals assist the County attorneys with all legal and administrative tasks.
The internal affairs investigator handles many of the investigations within the organization, including employee discrimination complaints and hotline calls.
The risk manager assesses and identifies potential risks to the County, and develops strategies to reduce the risk, losses, and costs to the County. The risk manager oversees the County’s insurance programs, claims management, and loss prevention. The paralegals assist the risk manager with all claim processing and management tasks.
The safety/loss control and training specialist is responsible for ensuring a safe work environment for the County's employees and minimizing losses and risks to the County. The specialist also develops and supervises the County's Risk Assessment Program (RAP).
The public records coordinator oversees the compliance of Inspection of Public Records Act requests received by Doña Ana County.
